When in 1542 first Spanish conquistadors set foot in Latin America, they went down-stream of the unknown powerful river and suddenly clashed with a hostile Indian tribe. The striking fact was that indigenous women not only followed their male fellow-tribesmen into battle but sometimes took up the arms of those killed or wounded and stood shoulder to shoulder with the tribe's warriors. Spaniards took them for the Amazons, a nation of militant women in the Greek mythology, and called the river Rio de las Amazonas, i.e. river of the Amazons.
Nowadays the word "an Amazon" is more or less associated with female initiative and implies some intriguing meaning.
